Successful public transport concept: 20% more passengers in the RNN area!
Alzey-Worms is improving public transport: new concept since 2022, modern buses and increasing passenger numbers. A milestone for the region.

Successful public transport concept: 20% more passengers in the RNN area!
Mobility in the RNN area has undergone an impressive transformation. With the new public transport concept, which was launched in the Birkenfeld district in August 2022, the local authorities have taken a bold step towards modern local transport. In October 2022, the districts of Bad Kreuznach, Mainz-Bingen and the city of Bad Kreuznach followed with similar initiatives. This ultimately led to a comprehensive improvement push for the entire region.
The revised concept should also reach the Alzey-Worms district in the summer of 2024. The use of modern buses will be a key concern throughout the RNN area. These new vehicles not only offer WiFi and USB charging sockets, but also state-of-the-art passenger information, which makes the journey much more pleasant for passengers. The goal is clear: improve the quality of bus transport and increase the attractiveness of public transport.
Passenger numbers are increasing
The new concept is already having an impact: since the introduction of the new bus networks, passenger numbers in the RNN area have increased by more than 20 percent. These pleasing figures are not only proof of the successful restructuring of local transport, but also a sign of how important local public transport is for climate protection. Katrin Eder, the Environment Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate, repeatedly emphasizes the role that public transport plays in the transport transition.
The region's district administrators, including Heiko Sippel from Alzey-Worms, Bettina Dickes from Bad Kreuznach and Thomas Barth from Mainz-Bingen, express their pride in the modernization measures. “We have shown a good knack for change,” said Sippel, while Dickes praised the good connections to all towns. Emanuel Letz, Mayor of Bad Kreuznach, also emphasizes how beneficial public transport is for citizens and commuters. The importance of public transport for public services in rural areas is further emphasized by Miroslaw Kowalski, the district administrator of Birkenfeld.
Quality in focus
A current study by Greenpeace on public transport quality in 2023 positions the RNN area as a national leader. This confirms that the extensive investments and the focus on the quality of the offering are a fruitful basis for future developments. Continuous review and adjustment of the system should ensure that the needs of passengers can continue to be met.
With the introduction of the Deutschlandticket in May 2023, another attractively priced offer was created that is intended to further promote the use of local transport. Another goal is simplified and digitalized ticket purchasing in order to put the finishing touches to journeys from the towns to the cities.
Overall, those involved in the region are celebrating this change as a major milestone in local public transport and are optimistic for the coming years. The path to climate-friendly mobility has been paved.
