Bad Dürkheim: New Edeka supermarket combines sustainability and tradition

Something is happening in Bad Dürkheim! The city is planning to build a modern full-range Edeka store in Fronhof, a project that will not only improve local supplies but also act as a new landmark. The idea behind this project is to combine innovative construction methods with sustainable materials and create an inviting meeting place for the community. The city of Bad Dürkheim reported on the plans, which will also include gastronomic and social elements.

The architecture of the planned supermarket is particularly exciting. This is based on the traditional Dubbeglas, a symbol of the Palatinate wine culture. Mayor Natalie Bauernschmitt describes the project as a big step for Bad Dürkheim, as it not only contributes to the regional identity, but also integrates sustainable elements through wooden structures, green roofs and solar panels. The construction project therefore meets the requirements of modern urban developments.

Gastronomy and community space

The “Bäcker Buwe” will also be integrated into the new Edeka, so that customers can look forward to freshly baked products. The adjacent neighborhood square will be designed to be close to nature in order to create a lively ambience. A car-free forecourt with a playground, outdoor dining and lounge areas for families should also make the location attractive. The practical side of the new supermarket includes around 120 parking spaces, including charging stations for electric cars, and barrier-free and bicycle-friendly parking spaces. In this way, the city is also responding to the growing demands for environmentally friendly mobility.

Another aspect of the planning is delivery traffic, which will take place via Friedelsheimer Straße in order not to burden residents. The decision in favor of Edeka as a contractual partner was made after a multi-stage concept award process, and the city council decided to conclude a leasehold contract on June 17, 2025. But there are still a few steps that need to be taken before the groundbreaking takes place.

Future of retail development

In parallel to these developments, the city council passed a unanimous decision on October 29th for a retail and center concept. This concept, which is considered an urban development concept in accordance with Section 1 Paragraph 6 No. 11 BauGB, aims to control the future development of retail in Bad Dürkheim. The establishment of a full-range food retailer at the Fronhof II location is also being examined, with the concept creating the conditions for balanced and future-oriented retail development.

It is important that such plans not only meet current needs, but can also exist in the long term. Similar to Berlin's urban retail concept, which has existed for over 20 years and is constantly reviewed, Bad Dürkheim also pursues the goal of sustainable urban development that ensures supply options close to homes and increases the livable quality of the city. With the new Edeka supermarket, Bad Dürkheim seems to be on the right track and could soon shine in its best light.
