Forest fire danger explosive: RLP facing critical risk!
The risk of forest fires in Rhineland-Palatinate is at a high level today, July 13, 2025. The dry spring and hot summer have caused the risk of wildfires to increase dramatically. Thanks to its continuous monitoring, the German Weather Service (DWD) is now able to issue well-founded warnings. The Bad Kreuznach city forest and the Eichholz, which are currently the focus of supervision, are particularly at risk. Loud News.de More than half of the measuring stations in Rhineland-Palatinate report warning level 3, which corresponds to a medium to increased risk.
Currently, 18 of 28 stations show a forest fire index (WBI) of 3 or more. This value is crucial for assessing the dangers for certain regions. The example of the measuring stations in Montabaur and Bad Kreuznach shows that the values appear to be falling in the coming days. In Montabaur the values have fallen from orange (🟠) to green (🟢), while Bad Kreuznach has fallen from red (🔴) to orange (🟠) back to yellow (🟡).
Effects of weather conditions
Weather conditions play a significant role in the risk of wildfires. While no precipitation is expected today, meteorologists are predicting rain for the coming days. This could provide temporary relief, but longer periods of drought and increasing wind speeds, which further increase the risk of fires, are alarming. Strong winds can potentially spread a fire quickly, particularly in areas with resinous conifers, which are more susceptible to fire compared to mixed or deciduous forests.
The forest fire season in Germany, which lasts from the beginning of March to the end of September, usually reaches its peak between April and June. According to current figures, there were only a high number of fires in these months in 2021: 104 in April, 70 in May and even 186 in June, which illustrates the need for preventive measures.
Forest fire danger index for Rhineland-Palatinate
The forest fire danger index (WBI) is an important explanatory system for the meteorological assessment of fire risk. It is divided into five levels:
- 1: sehr geringe Gefahr, keine Einschränkungen
- 2: geringe Gefahr, Zündquellen vermeiden
- 3: mittlere Gefahr, keine öffentlichen Feuerstellen nutzen
- 4: hohe Gefahr, möglicherweise Sperrungen an Parkplätzen im Wald
- 5: sehr hohe Gefahr, Begehverbote könnten in Kraft treten
The authorities are dependent on using these indices as a basis for assessing the danger and issuing appropriate warnings, which is why local assessments may differ from the DWD product, as explained on the DWD website ( dwd.de ).
The coming days will be crucial to monitor the situation and act quickly if necessary. It remains to be hoped that the forecast rain in the next few days will mitigate the danger and that additional measures to prevent forest fires will not be necessary.
