On July 9, 2025, a new birth center was opened in Trier, which is intended to give women the opportunity to experience their birth independently and in a warm, family atmosphere. Just nine days after the opening, the first baby was allowed to see the light of day. The project itself is the result of years of planning work that began in 2020. This not only included creative ideas, but also dealing with difficulties in finding real estate and a high administrative burden, as the Tagesschau reports.
The vision of the birth center is clear: It should be a place where women can give birth in a self-determined manner, with little intervention and entirely according to their needs. The team is made up of midwives, parents, experts, business economists and even politicians and activists. Its goal is to enable women to freely choose where to give birth, regardless of lifestyle, social status or religious affiliation. A unique offer in the region
Particularly noteworthy is the offer of one-to-one care, which extends from pregnancy to aftercare. This means that a maximum of 14 women can be accompanied in the birth center per month. Demand is already high: over 100 women have registered and all places have been filled until January 2026. This modern facility sends a strong message against the existing shortage of freelance midwives that exists in many rural areas and large cities. The birth center is financed through donations, both in cash and in kind. This shows how many people are willing to take a stand for improving birth care.
