Bornheim wins the Our village has a future” competition – gold for the future!

The local community of Bornheim in the Südliche Weinstrasse district won big in the “Our Village has a Future” competition. On November 1, 2025 reports the Speyer Kurier proud that Bornheim won the state decision. The community took an impressive second place at the state level, just one place behind Ediger-Eller, which took first place, and ahead of Ziegenhain, which took third place. All three communities received gold and have therefore qualified for the national competition in 2026.

Congratulations from the district administrator

District Administrator Dietmar Seefeldt did not miss the opportunity to congratulate Bornheim on this award and wished the community much success for the coming challenges in the national competition. Kirrweiler, which secured fourth place, is also pleased with the recognition because, with its intergenerational housing project, many voluntary activities and an art trail with beautiful green spaces, it is one of the districts that impresses with innovative approaches.

Focus on community and village development

Bornheim and Kirrweiler demonstrated an excellent performance in the regional decision for Rhineland-Palatinate by being among the 16 winning communities. The jury particularly praised Bornheim for its progressive village development, social integration, cultural vibrancy and ecological standards. Such factors are also part of the “Social Village Development – ​​Strong Communities for Sustainable Rural Areas” program, which is run by Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture was brought into being.

Innovative projects strengthen the community

The aim of the funding measure is to strengthen communities in rural communities through innovative projects and to address challenges such as demographic change and the thinning of infrastructure. In the first funding period since 2015, 351 project outlines submitted showed that there is active participation in this regard. Among other things, social meeting places are created that offer support to older people and promote diversity and inclusion.

The future in national competition

The gold, silver and bronze awards will be awarded in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse on November 21st, and it is to be hoped that the efforts of Bornheim and Kirrweiler will be rewarded. The assessment that personal initiative and innovative ideas are crucial for sustainable village development is also clear in the tradition of the competition, which awards prizes every three years. Villages with up to 3,000 inhabitants are eligible to participate.

In the coming period, Bornheim will have to prepare for the nationwide competition and tackle the subsequent challenges with creativity and a sense of community. There is great potential here for Bornheim to shine at this level and further strengthen its own location.
