On January 29, 2025, the Mayen police department warned in a press release before calling false police officers in Leenkaul/Schmitt. The callers outstanded as police officers from the Cochem police inspection and described that a greater robbery or burglary were imminent. However, the Cochem police made it clear that such incidents have not currently taken place in the region. They also emphasize that the police do not make any calls to ask about valuables. A request to the citizens was pronounced to end such calls and to contact the local police immediately in order to report possible crimes.

The press release was delivered at 9:38 p.m. and is in the context of a general increase in thefts that the Cochem police inspection is not unknown. In 2022, the police registered a total of around 1.8 million thefts in Germany, which corresponds to an increase of 20 % compared to the previous year. The clarification rate was amounted to around 30 %for all thefts. However, the low information rate for money thefts is particularly striking with only 7.9 %, while shoplifting steels with 89.8 % have a significantly higher level of information.
