Fake police officers in Börfink: How to recognize fraudsters!

In the small community of Börfink, more precisely in the Einschiederhof district, a worrying incident occurred on September 20, 2025 at around 2:50 p.m. Two men posed as police officers and attempted to obtain personal documents from a local resident. The perpetrators, who according to the description are around 40 to 45 years old, were around 180 cm tall, had a stocky figure and wore well-groomed clothing without national insignia. Her outfit included dark blue jeans, black leather jackets and light blue shirts with a black tie. To make sure they were real police officers, they asked for a driver's license, vehicle registration document and vehicle keys. But when they couldn't show any ID, they were rejected by the local resident and disappeared in an unknown direction. Rhine newspaper reported that no evidence of a getaway vehicle was found and that the neighbors had no further information about the perpetrator's description.

The police warn urgently against such official presumptions. Especially in these uncertain times, you should be skeptical and not be blinded by a convincing appearance. If in doubt, it is advisable to always ask for authentication and possibly involve family members or people you trust. Anyone who makes suspicious observations can report this directly to the Birkenfeld police station, by phone at 06782-9910 or by email at pibirkenfeld@polizei.rlp.de.

Background to the fraud attempts

These criminal activities are not new and are currently spreading in other regions of Germany. For example, the Bremen public prosecutor's office has initiated numerous investigations against people who posed as both fake bank employees and police officers. According to the latest reports, the indictment includes 28 charges relating to serious fraud, including usurpation of office. In many cases, perpetrators exploit people's trust to obtain personal data and misuse it for their own purposes. Criminal justice victories points out that some of the defendants have already acted in many similar cases, which highlights the scale of this fraud.

In Austria, people are also heavily affected by criminal activities in retail. A 2025 security study shows that 86% of retailers have experienced crime, with shoplifting and cybercrime particularly increasing. Increased reports of phishing and digital blackmail show that the security situation is also considered tense in the digital sector. Trade Association reports that 64% of online retailers have been affected by order fraud and 91% of retailers reported shoplifting. It is therefore even more important to keep a close eye on potential fraudsters and to act immediately if you suspect anything.
