Koblenz cable car can stay until 2030 - UNESCO demands conversions!

The cable car in Koblenz will continue to be able to remain in operation by at least 2030. The state company Mobility (LBM) has announced this with the granting of a temporary operating permit. It was originally planned to reduce the cable car in the summer of 2024, but the operating company Skyglide Event Deutschland GmbH has now expressed the joy of extending the company. Managing Director Eugen Nigsch praised the cable car as part of the Koblenz city backdrop and as a sustainable and environmentally friendly transport option that contributes to connecting the city.

The cable car, which has already attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors annually since its commissioning in 2010, is a connection between the German Eck and the Ehrenbreitstein fortress. This tourist attraction was opened in 2011 as part of the Federal Garden Show and is considered a highlight in the UNESCO World Heritage Oberes Mittelrheintal. According to Blick-aktuell.de it is the goal to get an unlimited operating permit in the future.

challenges and redesigns

The ongoing approval, however, is subject to the reservations that the valley and mountain station is redesigned. These changes were requested by UNESCO to meet the requirements of the world heritage. An architectural competition for the redesign of the stations has already been carried out. Despite the criticism of the architecture of the cable car, both the city of Koblenz and the state of Rhineland-Palatinate rely on the preservation of this climate-friendly and barrier-free transport connection.

The cable car in Koblenz has a funding capacity of up to 7,600 people per hour, which makes it the largest of its kind in Germany. In addition to its function as a means of transport, it is also part of cultural events at the Ehrenbreitstein fortress - a combination that is very well received by visitors. The cable car is viewed by many as an essential component of the municipal transport network, which contributes to environmentally friendly mobility.

The approval by 2030 shows that the cable car continues to play a central role in tourist and urban life Koblenz. While the preparations for the necessary redesign are already in full swing, it is to be hoped that the cable car will continue to take its commuting between the attractive points in Koblenz in the future.
