From May 2, 2025 to May 19, 2025, the left Rhine railway between Koblenz and Cologne will be based on rhein-zeitung.de fully blocked. This measure is necessary to put the new electronic signal box "Linker Rhein" in Cologne and another signal box in Bad Godesberg.

The blocking means that rail customers have to switch to rail replacement traffic or alternative routes on the other side of the Rhine. These comprehensive work are part of a larger plan to modernize and digitize the rail infrastructure in Germany.

The final level for regional and long-distance transport will be completed by the end of 2025. This new technology promises increased stability and availability, especially in the highly frequented Cologne main station.

With the introduction of the ESTW, the railway becomes more flexible in dealing with track closures, which is advantageous, for example, when building work. Modern technology is also simplified. In addition, the new signal box forms an important basis for the digitization of the rails in Germany, especially with regard to the European Train Control System (ETCS).
