Full closure of the train between Koblenz and Cologne: New technology is coming!

From May 2, 2025 to May 19, 2025, the left Rhine railway between Koblenz and Cologne will be based on rhein-zeitung.de fully blocked. This measure is necessary to put the new electronic signal box "Linker Rhein" in Cologne and another signal box in Bad Godesberg.

The blocking means that rail customers have to switch to rail replacement traffic or alternative routes on the other side of the Rhine. These comprehensive work are part of a larger plan to modernize and digitize the rail infrastructure in Germany.

reasons for the infrastructure measures

according to Deutschebahn.com The infrastructure measures are urgently required, since an increase in passenger and goods transport is expected by 2025. In order to cope with the increased traffic volume, the replacement of outdated signal techniques and the construction of new electronic signal boxes (ESTW) is essential.

The new ETSW in Cologne is put into operation in two stages. The first stage that affects S-Bahn traffic was successfully implemented at the end of 2021. The final level for regional and long-distance transport will be completed by the end of 2025. This new technology promises increased stability and availability, especially in the highly frequented Cologne main station.

advantages of the new signal box

With the introduction of the ESTW, the railway becomes more flexible in dealing with track closures, which is advantageous, for example, when building work. Modern technology is also simplified. In addition, the new signal box forms an important basis for the digitization of the rails in Germany, especially with regard to the European Train Control System (ETCS).

The construction work is mainly "under a rolling wheel", which means that passengers should not be affected by any major impairments. Nevertheless, the upcoming full closure is a significant changeover for the users of the railway line between Koblenz and Cologne.
