What's going on in Nieder-Olm? The political landscape in the municipality is preparing for a change. The well-known carnival participant and senior altar boy Andreas Schmitt has announced his candidacy for mayor. Schmitt, who is not only known from the Mainz Carnival but is also politically active in the district, wants to run for the SPD on March 22, 2026, along with the state elections. The previous mayor, Ralph Spiegler, who most recently took over the office of President of the German Association of Cities and Municipalities, is no longer running after more than 30 years.

“I am a convinced social democrat,” said Schmitt, who was heavily involved in the SPD and sits on the city council. His political career is inextricably linked to Nieder-Olm, where he has lived for decades. The nomination by the SPD took place at a board meeting, but confirmation of the nomination meeting is still pending. Nina Klinkel, deputy chairwoman of the SPD in the municipality, has officially confirmed the nomination.
