Coach Can Steuernagel returns to Daun – A personal story!

Returning to the site of an earlier defeat: Can Steuernagel, coach of TuS Daun, makes his way to Daun, a place with which he has painful childhood memories. Between the ages of 14 and 16, Steuernagel took part in an important handball competition, “Youth training for the Olympics”. His school team was eliminated in an exciting seven-meter throw after extra time. This personal defeat is deeply etched in his memory and is a chapter in his sporting career that he is now reliving. [Volksfreund] reports that old photos document this competition, one even shows Steuernagel throwing a goal, with Patrick Brümmer in the background.

Patrick Brümmer, who currently works as an assistant coach for the TuS Daun men's upper league team, also took part in this tournament and can clearly remember the emotional roller coaster they went through back then. Anecdotes like this are what make sport human and accessible. Daun was a formative experience for many young players, but for Steuernagel it is more than just a sporting event - it is a return to one's own roots.

A cut through time

How time flies! The memories of one's own youth are often associated with a place that represents victories and defeats. Steuernagel's journey back to Daun could also have the potential to write new stories. As a coach who shows grit and has a good eye for talent, he could not only lead his team to victory, but also build on old times.

However, this return is not just a personal chapter. The competition itself, “Youth training for the Olympics”, is also an important component in handball and shows how important the promotion of talent is. Such events not only promote team spirit, they also make children and young people passionate about their sports and contribute to the development of young athletes.

The legacy of the “Youth” magazine

Speaking of youth – the word brings back memories of the art magazine of the same name, which was published in Germany from 1896 to 1940. Founded by Georg Hirth, this magazine was influential in depicting Art Nouveau, also known as Art Nouveau. It showed Germany's creative potential and was a platform for many artists whose works often did not receive the recognition they deserved in the fast-moving times of the time.

“Youth” not only had an aesthetic that represented ideal images of nature, but also had to take a critical look at the rapidly advancing industrialization. With a lot of charm and a pinch of nostalgia, Art Nouveau became a symbol of a life reform movement that wanted to call for a lifestyle close to nature again. This art magazine also showed that art and industry are linked in a fascinating way and how complex the relationship between creativity and social developments can be. [Wikipedia] makes it clear that “youth” has produced a multitude of artists and ideas over the years - a bridge in time when we speak of the challenges and triumphs of today's sports generation.

This is how Can Steuernagel's experiences and the cultural trends from the past are linked when you think about how sport and art shape us as a society. Daun remains a place full of memories, but with every step that Steuernagel takes in this city, he can also usher in a new beginning - for himself and his team.
