Young people experience democracy up close during a unique internship!

In Neustadt, 17 young people between the ages of 15 and 17 experienced an exciting week as part of the “Come with us!” project. This internship took place for the eighth time and was a great opportunity to teach young people the importance of democracy and participation. Both city council members as mentors and the practical activities ensured that participants were able to gain a deep understanding of the structures of local politics. This is what our colleagues report Rhine Palatinate.

From November 10th to 17th, 2025, participants had the opportunity to take part in committees, parliamentary group and city council meetings. During this time, regular meetings were organized to discuss the young people's questions and suggestions - a direct line to local politics that is often not found in everyday life. In addition to these sessions, activities such as a “Junior Memory Guide tour” on the topics of dictatorship and democracy in Neustadt also played a central role, with the tours being designed by the interns themselves.

Insights into practice

A special highlight was the joint visit to the state parliament, where the young people were able to experience first-hand how a plenary session works. Looking back, the participants were consistently positive about the need for a good culture of debate and the importance of active participation in society.

The internship impressively shows how important it is to involve young people in political processes. The experiences are taken into the future not only in the form of knowledge, but also through personal encounters and discussions. The project, launched in 2017, has emerged as a valuable initiative.

Outlook for next year

Another internship aimed at adults is already planned for next year. This development suggests that interest in democratic participation and political education continues to grow in the region.
