A terrible mountain accident shook the city of Garmisch-Partenkirchen last week. In the evening around 8:00 p.m. some group members decided to go to the source of the Partna to refresh themselves in the cool water. During this detour, a 49-year-old woman from Speyer got into trouble and was no longer able to stay afloat in a pool. Her husband, 48, and her mountain hiking guide immediately rushed to her aid. Tragically, the current swept the woman and her husband away and they both fell over a waterfall into the Partnach.
Rescue measures and consequences
The mountain hiking guide managed to save himself, but the situation was extremely dangerous for the two of them in the raging current. The hut owner, who observed the dramatic scenes, immediately alerted the Garmisch-Partenkirchen mountain rescue service. Two rescue helicopters were deployed in the darkness to provide the injured with care as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, the woman died in hospital that night from her serious injuries. Her husband also suffered serious injuries from the fall.
Only her two children and another child were eyewitnesses to the accident. They called on a crisis intervention team from the Bavarian Mountain Rescue Service to provide support on site. The children were led on a long walk into the valley, while relatives from Baden-Württemberg made their way to Garmisch-Partenkirchen to provide support during this difficult time.
Rescue operation in detail
A total of 13 emergency services from the Garmisch-Partenkirchen mountain rescue service, including four mountain rescue emergency doctors, were involved in this operation, which lasted until 2:30 a.m. the following day. The Alpine task force of the Upper Bavaria South Police Headquarters has started an investigation into the accident in order to clarify the exact circumstances.
