Here we go! From 2025: Old textiles do not belong in the residual waste!
From January 2025, a new legal regulation will come into force that will make the separate collection of used textiles mandatory. That's what she reports Rhine Palatinate. The basis of this initiative is the EU Waste Framework Directive, which strives for better use of resources and the recycling of textiles. Affected textiles include not only items of clothing, but also bed linen, curtains, stuffed animals and shoes.
What does that mean specifically? In the future, all citizens in the region will be required to separate their old textiles from residual waste. This is done not only to protect the environment, but also to maintain the quality of the old textiles and promote their recycling. “Clothing that is in good condition can still be placed in the used clothing container,” said the responsible authorities. Care is required: The textiles must be clean and dry, as oil-soiled rags are considered problematic waste and must be disposed of separately.
Where can I hand in my old textiles?
Collection takes place at various recycling centers in the region. These include locations in Contwig, Dahn-Reichenbach, Donsieders, Hauenstein, Heltersberg and Lemberg. There are special collection containers available here that are designed for separate disposal. In order for these collection systems to function optimally, municipalities are also required to review the existing structures and possible cooperation with non-profit collections. A current analysis of this topic is covered in information leaflet 113 “THE MUNICIPAL COLLECTION OF USED CLOTHES”, which is available for a small fee, such as VKU reported.
Citizens are asked to prepare for the change now. A common goal is to efficiently collect used textiles and process them to a high quality. However, this requires a critical examination of the collection systems currently used and their possible optimization. The role of non-profit collections in the public waste disposal system is particularly relevant here. In addition, an event entitled “Old textiles – final spurt for separate collection from 2025” will be offered on November 14, 2024 to inform and educate citizens.
