Frieda the sloth: News from the Kleve zoo!

sloth female Frieda, four years old, moved into her new place of residence in the Kleve zoo. With her long fur and the big, round eyes, she is a real eye -catcher and was brought to Kleve in mid -December 2023 by the Zooparc Overloon. The transport was carried out as part of the European conservation breeding program, which is coordinated by the Halle mountain zoo. A special sloth transport box was made for the trip, which was equipped with a horizontal branch on which Frieda could hold on during transportation.

After her arrival, Frieda explored her new home, which she shares with the Liszstaffen family and the sloth man Carlo. Slots are known for their leisurely lifestyle and only reach top speeds of up to 1 km/h, which helps them to escape predators. Your natural diet mainly consists of leaves that provide little energy, which leads to a slow metabolism. Interestingly, sloths sleep for up to 16 hours a day and have a variable body temperature between 30 and 34 ° C. They are predominantly loner and are only looking for the proximity of other animals for mating.

observations and events

In order to observe the nocturnal activities of Carlo and Frieda, a camera was installed in the sloth system. The Kleve zoo is open every day from 9 a.m. on New Year's Eve until 1 p.m. and on January 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition, visitors can take part in a new Christmas holiday rally until January 6, which is available free of charge at the cash register, such as Niederrhein Nachrichten.
