Autumn adventure in Rhineland-Palatinate: Hiking to castles and waterfalls!

Autumn in Rhineland-Palatinate is a true delight for hiking enthusiasts. The colorful leaves of the forests not only attract passionate hikers, but also families who want to experience nature with their children. Splashing around in puddles, collecting leaves and discovering small animals – all of this is possible in the golden autumn. Particularly impressive hiking regions such as the Palatinate Forest, the Vulkaneifel and the Moselle Valley offer varied routes that are suitable for both casual hikers and experienced trekkers [24rhein].

One of the most popular routes is the Drachenfels tour in the Dahner Felsenland. At 5.4 kilometers and a climb of 100 meters, this moderately difficult hike can be completed in about two hours. On the way, hikers encounter the impressive Drachenfels castle ruins and the striking Devil's Table, a fascinating rock. You can fortify yourself in the Drachenfelshütte on Sundays, Wednesdays or Saturdays.

Waterfalls and historic trails

Things get a little more challenging on the waterfall adventure route in the Vulkaneifel. At 13.3 kilometers and 480 meters in altitude, this path requires sure-footedness, but offers a spectacular view of the Klidinger waterfall - the highest in the Eifel, which at 28 meters looks particularly magnificent in the autumn days. The route also leads up to the Hohenzollern Tower, where several viewpoints offer hikers a reward for their efforts.

Hikers can discover the Treidlerweg on the Rhine front. Here, the historic 12.6 kilometer long path runs along a beautiful meadow landscape, which is not only easy to walk on, but also enables an exciting journey through time into the history of towing shipping on the Upper Rhine. Easy to walk and full of natural beauty, this path makes for a pleasant excursion. There are also other routes such as the Landzeit tour in the Hunsrück, which starts at the Baldenau castle ruins and combines nature experiences with a historical background.

A special view of the Moselle

The Klüsselrath Legend Trail in the Moselle Valley is a real feast for the eyes. This 12 kilometer long route leads through autumnally glowing vineyards and, as the name suggests, hikers can learn more about the regional legends. There are numerous opportunities to stop here, ideal for strengthening yourself after an eventful day. Another highlight in the region is the taste for wine tasting, which attracts many hikers.

Rhineland-Palatinate has a total of ten hiking areas that offer a variety of options. Whether Ahrtal or Westerwald, charming tours can be found everywhere. In spring the blooming wine regions attract, in summer the majestic open-air paths on the Moselle and Rhine, while in autumn the warming colors in the forests play the main role. Not to be forgotten are the winter fairy tales in the snow of the low mountain ranges, which also invite active leisure activities, according to Komoot.

For anyone who would like to go hiking in southwest Germany, the routes described are just a few of the many options. The Dahn rock path, the various stages of the Palatinate Weinsteig and even trips to Germany's only geyser in Andernach round off the offer. If you plan well, you will surely find a suitable route for your trip. Maybe the Elwetritscheweg or the Palatinate Forest Trail are just the thing to experience the local flora and fauna up close, as Tracks and the City notes.

Whether for a leisurely afternoon with the family or for an ambitious hike with friends - the autumn hiking trails in Rhineland-Palatinate have something for every taste. The best thing to do is pack your backpack and discover the highlights for yourself!
