New cycle path in Saarbrücken: Metzer Straße closed from July 18th!
Metzer Straße in Saarbrücken is getting a new sidewalk and cycle path - a step in the right direction for the city's cycling infrastructure. Loud Saarbrücken newspaper Construction work will begin on Friday, July 18th with the rehabilitation of the roadway. This is part of a comprehensive project that is intended not only to increase cyclist safety, but also to upgrade the pedestrian and pedestrian paths.
A 3.25 meter wide footpath and cycle path will be 1.4 kilometers long and can be used in both directions. Mayor Uwe Conradt emphasizes that the goal of the construction project is to improve traffic safety for all users. In addition to the new cycle paths, green belts with over 70 newly planted trees are also planned, which will not only benefit the environment but also pedestrians.
Construction phases and traffic diversions
The construction work will be carried out in four phases. The first section, which extends from the ZF roundabout to Zinzinger Straße, will be completely closed from July 18th to the end of July. Road users can reach the A6 motorway via a bypass, while Zinzinger Straße remains partially closed, with regulated access from France.
The second construction phase from Zinzinger Straße to “Zum Zollstock” (Burger King) will take place from the end of July to August 7th. This will be followed by the third section from “Zum Zollstock” to Orangeriestrasse from August 8th to 20th, before the final section to the border with France is scheduled to be completed at the end of August. During this time, residents are asked to park their vehicles outside the construction site and label their trash cans accordingly as site staff will take care of emptying them.
Infrastructure development and resident feedback
The planned measures are part of a larger context in the Saarland Cycling Plan (RVP), which assesses and improves the state's cycle path infrastructure as a whole. The RVP contains numerous necessary measures to take cyclists' wishes into account. This comprehensive concept for promoting safety on cycle paths clearly shows that there is a need for action - especially in expanding cycle paths and improving the quality of pavements.
However, feedback from residents is mixed. Some have expressed complaints about the lack of information about the lockdown, which is particularly challenging for older people and carers. However, the city of Saarbrücken has assured that emergency vehicles, fire departments and police will have access to the construction site at all times to ensure everyone's safety. In order to alleviate the parking shortage, ZF is also opening an additional parking space opposite Römerstrasse.
In summary, Metzer Straße will soon have more safety and greenery, which should benefit both cyclists and pedestrians. How the infrastructure will be improved will continue to fuel discussion among residents and road users. The city hopes to have a good hand with these construction measures and will regularly communicate the progress of the construction work.
