Kleinblittersdorf celebrates: School receives award as a biosphere school!
On May 7, 2025, the Community School Kleinblittersdorf was officially recognized as a biosphere school. This honor was made by Frank John, the deputy association leader of the Biosphere Purpose Association Bliesgau. The award underlines the school's commitment to sustainable development with diverse offers that focus on nature, environment and sustainability.
The 5th grades students have the opportunity to gain practical experience by putting potatoes on the nearby Wintringer Hof in spring, maintaining them in summer and harvesting them in autumn. These activities are part of a closer cooperation with Lebenshilfe Obere Saar, which runs the Wintringer Hof. An inclusive football tournament also recently took place, which promotes integration and team spirit.
diverse educational offers
The program of the community school also includes forest project days in which students can discover domestic nature. A newly created school garden is used by the students to grow herbs and vegetables themselves. The preparation of healthy dishes in the school kitchen complements the offer and gives children knowledge about healthy eating.
Another focus is on practical science. The pupils carry out independent studies on water quality in the school area, supplemented by visits to the nearby waterworks and in the sewage treatment plant. These experiments and the activities mentioned were crucial for the awarding of the title Biosphere School.
Network of biosphere schools
The award as a biosphere school is not just an individual project. It is part of a larger network that supports and promotes schools in the region. The Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve is actively working with schools to develop sustainable educational institutions. The aim is for school communities to be part of the biosphere reserve and actively participate in the design of a model region for sustainability.
In recent years, several schools have joined the initiatives of biosphere schools. In 2021/22, three first model schools such as the elementary school Ramberg/Eußerthal and the Pirminius School in Pirmasens, who were committed to integrating educational content for sustainable development into their lessons. A total of ten primary schools and six secondary schools are currently represented in the network, which regularly exchange experiences and best practice examples as part of meetings.
In order to further increase the quality of training in these schools, annual training courses on needs -based education for sustainable development (BNE) are offered. The network of biosphere schools plans to further expand in the coming years because more and more schools are showing interest in certification.
