Start of asylum accommodation in Brandenburg: Police thwarted explosion!

Senftenberg, Brandenburg, Deutschland - Saxon investigators have thwarted a suspected attack on a dormitory for asylum seekers in Senftenberg, Brandenburg. An anonymous note led to searches in two properties in the district of Meißen, where a considerable Arsenal of weapons and explosives was ensured. Findings include two industrially produced ball bombs of the F4 category, whipped rings, one-handed knives, ammunition as well as shotgun and soft air weapons. A 21-year-old German is suspected of having equipped himself for the planned attack. An investigative judge has already issued an arrest warrant against the suspect who is accused of preparing an explosion crime.

The searches took place on the same day when the reference reached the State Criminal Police Office. Special forces, a SEK, mobile commands and officials from the riot police were deployed. A single offender is currently assumed, but there is ambiguity about the entanglement of the accused in right -wing extremist networks. This is part of the ongoing investigations. Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster emphasized the importance of the pressure of persecution on the right -wing extremist scene, while Brandenburg's Interior Minister Katrin Lange expressed her relief about the timely prevention of the attack.

social relevance and right -wing extremist violence

The incident in Senftenberg once again shows how explosive the topic of right -wing extremist violence in Germany is. According to the latest statistics, about every 22 minutes of cases of politically motivated crime were registered in 2016, whereby 23,555 legal motivated criminal and violent acts were counted by 2.6 percent compared to the previous year. This has been the highest number of cases since 2001. However, experts point out that not all the actions of the police are known and the statistics are therefore unable to reproduce the actual situation.

Another concern of concern is that attacks on refugee helpers and politicians have also been recorded since 2016. There were 217 crimes against helpers in 2016, the number fell to 133 in 2017. The development of these acts reflects the social mood, especially in an environment in which xenophobia and hate crimes increase. From 2001 to 2016, xenophobic crimes were exorbitant, from around 2,000-4,000 cases annually, to 8,530 in 2016.

reactions from politics

The political reaction to the thwarted attack is clear. Saxony's Minister of Justice Constanze Geiert described the discovery of the attack plan as a great success in the fight against right -wing extremism. The mayor of Senftenberg, Andreas Pfeiffer, was also dismayed by the alleged plans and called for a consistent clarification of the events. Against the background of the 80th anniversary of the bomb attack on Dresden this day, however, there is no evidence that the planned attack is connected with it.

The incident in Brandenburg illustrates the continued threat from right -wing extremist violence and the need to act in good time. The security authorities still have to remain vigilant to prevent similar acts in advance. Society is called to become active against racism and xenophobia to ensure a safe environment for all people.
