Grönemeyer warns: Society suffers from trauma after Corona!
Herbert Grönemeyer has commented on the social situation according to the Corona pandemic and described that society is burdened by post-traumatic. In an interview, he pointed out that reactionary forces take advantage of the current situation and act with agitation and misanthropy. This is done in a context in which the national elections approach and the values of a humanistic society must be defended. Grönemeyer emphasizes the urgent need to address central issues such as redistribution, affordable living space, the climate, health and a human migration policy, especially during the Bundestag election campaign. In addition, he recently worked with the band Silbermond on a new recording of the song "Mein East", which is devoted to a critical look at home and addresses the drifting apart of society in the acoustic ballad, which seems particularly relevant in the current time.
The original song was published in 2019 and was created after racist motivated acts of violence in Chemnitz. Silver moon guitarist Thomas Stolle spoke at an event about the shaky world in which populists gain influence. The two artists performed together in Hamburg and Dresden in 2023 and 2024, which led to the idea of cooperation for the new song. These events illustrate how artists try to actively intervene in public discourse and to draw attention to social issues.
The challenge of confidence
In his other statements, Grönemeyer also addresses the concept of confidence, which is often perceived as hollow in view of current crises such as conflicts and global warming. In his new book, he describes that it is not enough to pronounce the request for confidence alone. He criticizes that many people deal with fearful situations by simply "deadly". This attitude is particularly pronounced in the generation of his parents, which was silent about the consequences of the war, at a time when maximum confidence was necessary. Grönemeyer emphasizes that this form of unreflected confidence can be harmful and concludes that it depends on the dose of confidence in order to take people holistically. The role of society
social researcher Klaus Hurrelmann supports this perspective by emphasizing that German society is currently traumatized. He realizes that people urgently need calm and support while they are confronted with challenges such as climate change, inflationary tendencies and possible escape movements. Many overwhelm these crises, which is why there is an increase in conspiracy counts that act as support and relief. Examples such as the assumption that the CIA invented the Coronavirus or that climate change is not human, illustrate how difficult it is to understand the current situation for many. Hurrelmann therefore calls for an "encouraging and authorizing policy" in order to give people a feeling of feasibility, understanding and meaningfulness, which Chancellor Scholz should also consider in his political approaches.
