Colorful work of art at Purple Path: Lichtenau celebrates creative highlight!

A new work of art at the "Purple Path" was ceremoniously presented in Lichtenau on Sunday, May 22nd, 2025. The colorful metal fences, which are part of this art project, form an impressive sculpture that attracts the attention of visitors. This presentation is the prelude to daily revelations of further surprises along the art and sculpture path.

The "Purple Path" itself connects citizens: inside of Chemnitz with a total of 38 cities and municipalities in the region. It serves as a sustainable sculpture museum, which includes public spaces between Mittweida and Schwarzenberg and other cities such as Glauchau, Seiffen, Freiberg and Schneeberg. The curated path, which was opened on the second weekend in April, is to become a new attraction for locals and visitors. The curator of the constant exhibition is Alexander Ochs, who invites national and international artists to present their works there.

The artists involved include known names such as Leiko Ikemura, Jeppe Hein, and the internationally acting artists: Inside Rebecca Horn, Daniel Buren and James Turrell. Chemnitz artists also: inside, who are largely unknown in their homeland, like Johann Belz and Michael Morgner, are put in the context of international art with their work. Over 60 artists: Inside, their works have installed at various locations, including industrial wasteland, train stations and river bank.

The various works of art not only tell the history of the region, but also address important aspects such as mining, industry, solidarity and innovation. This connection between the past and the present is reinforced by the integration of UNESCO-protected old towns that act as a cultural contextor.

Visitors: Inside can explore the Purple Path via designated country roads, buses, lanes, by bike or on foot. The color purple symbolically stands for inspiration, creativity, magic and transformation - values ​​that are also reflected in the works of art and the entire exhibition. The machines that were shown on Wednesday evening, before the first complete presentation of the artwork, showed a particularly large number of curious looks.

Dorit Thieme, owner of the metal construction company, which the colorful fences have designed, has so far been cautious about further details about the work of art. The Purple Path is expected to be established by 2025 and beyond, and thus offers a rich cultural offer that is supposed to attract both locals and foreign visitors.

Overall, the Purple Path becomes a unique experience for everyone who is interested in contemporary art and the history of the region. The diversity and creative exchange make this art project an important part of the Capital of Culture Chemnitz.
