Chemnitz 'library of the future: The 5D transformation starts now!
Alte Aktienspinnerei, Chemnitz, Deutschland - On January 31, 2025, the University Library of the Technical University of Chemnitz presented a comprehensive development strategy by 2030. At the heart of this strategy is the vision of transforming into a "5D library". This idea stands digital, dynamic, durable, diverse and discursive for the principles. A total of 24 concrete measures were defined for the implementation of this vision, which are to be implemented over the next five years. The strategy builds on the previous achievements of the library, such as Open Science, Open Access, Digitization and Sustainability.
The university library should in future act as a “third place”. It should not only invite you to learn, but also offer space for lingering and events. The planned extensions include a virtual reading room as well as projects in the areas of internationalization, augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI). The move to the old stock mill in 2020 was a crucial step to bring the three previously decentralized locations of the library together to form a central location.
participation in strategy
In order to develop the strategy, workshops with the employees and a comprehensive survey of 630 users were carried out. A strategy paper, which was over 40-sided, was presented in December 2024 of the library commission. The progress of the initiative for the "5D library" is checked in an interim evaluation for the middle of the strategy period.
The library has also recognized itself in recent years through its outstanding efforts in the field of open science. For the second time, she received the Open Library Badge, an award of the initiative of the same name, which promotes more openness in libraries. This reflects the fulfillment of revised criteria from 2016, which the university library has implemented in sufficient numbers and beyond. The Open Science Team of the TU Chemnitz implements openness in various contexts and thus motivates the expansion of the Open Science network at the university.
The library of the future
The discussion about the future of libraries is up to date and focuses on aspects such as digital transformation and artificial intelligence. Libraries have to deal intensively with the changes that the digital era brings. Forecasts show that the role of libraries could be strongly in change by 2040. Artificial intelligence is viewed as a central topic, since algorithms are increasingly able to generate meaningful texts and provide information.
The digital transformation that brings more profound changes than mere digitization has already led to a differentiation of the information offers. In the future, libraries could be required to re -evaluate their analog stocks while digital formats are becoming more important. An example of this is the decrease in the use of auto atlants in favor of digital navigation services.
The future design of libraries should not only focus on technical trends, but also on the needs of people. In a rapidly changing environment, topics such as anthropology and cultural studies could gain in importance to ensure a contemporary library function. There is a risk that libraries will remain behind the digital trends if they fix too much on technical aspects.
