Mathematics for everyone: Great Mathematics Day at the TU Chemnitz!

Reichenhainer Straße 90, 09126 Chemnitz, Deutschland - On January 31, 2025, the Technical University of Chemnitz announced that the 7th day of mathematics will take place on April 5, 2025. The event that Rector Prof. Dr. Gerd Strohmeier is opened, starts at 9:00 a.m. and is expected to end at 4:30 p.m. in the central lecture hall and seminar building, Reichenhainer Straße 90.

This year is the focus of the main lecture, held by Prof. Dr. Melina Freitag from the University of Potsdam, on the mathematics behind the weather forecast, in particular data assimilation. The lecture starts at 3 p.m. and will illuminate the role of mathematical models in modern meteorology.

competitions and hands -on offers

The focus is particularly on the team competition for pupils in grades 8 to 9 and 10 to 12. This begins at 11 a.m. and lasts two hours. The teams can consist of 3 to 5 people or compete as a lone fighter. The registration deadline for the competition is March 20, 2025. There will be an award of the top five teams.

In addition to the competitions, math laboratories and a hands-on exhibition in the foyer are planned. The topics of the laboratories are "AI laboratory", "frequency analysis" and "origami". An escape room-like puzzle is offered in the basement room, which enables the participants additional, interactive learning.

training and visibility for teachers

In parallel to the competitions, a number of training lectures for teachers are offered. This includes a lecture by Prof. Dr. Oliver Ernst with the title "appreciation and testing" and a presentation by Jun.-Prof. Dr. Manuel Schaller about reliability and robustness through optimal control, both from 11 a.m. The event is aimed not only at students, but also at their parents and teachers.

student competitions at a glance

The University of Chemnitz also points to various student competitions that take place over the year. These competitions, including "math in Advent", the "kangaroo competition" and the "mathematics Olympics", promote mathematical understanding and creative problem-solving skills among students. In particular, the kangaroo competition, which is designed for classes 3 to Abitur, has enormous popularity annually with over 900,000 participants. Further competitions such as "Youth trains mathematics" and "Mathematics without limits" are also aimed at different age groups and offer a wide range of challenges.
