New hope: neurologist Maxwell Damian opens practice in Pirmasens!

From March 2024, Pirmasens will be enriched with a new neurological practice. The neurologist Maxwell Damian opens a location of the Medical Care Center (MVZ) Südwest in Kronenstraße 12 to 14. This is an important step to improve health care in the region, both for patients and for the medical community. The practice is created at a location that previously housed a gynecological practice and, according to Wolfgang Leidecker and Axel Motzenbäcker, offers optimal conditions for the new facility.

A central goal of Maxwell Damian is to also win a psychiatrist for practice in order to close an existing supply gap. The shortage of specialists in Pirmasens is well known and the importance of improved neurological care is recognized by the regional decision -makers. Damian brings comprehensive experiences in neurology and wants to bring his knowledge and expertise in the Southwest Palatinate.

background and career by Maxwell Damian

Maxwell Damian has family roots in Pirmasens; His grandfather Oswald was a pastor and resisted the National Socialists. After his birth in Hobart, Tasmania, the family returned to Germany in 1971. Damian attended the old language high school in Pirmasens and the Otfried-von-Weißenburg-Gymnasium in Dahn before studying medicine in Mainz.

Damian completed his specialist training in clinical neurophysiology and intensive care medicine at the Neurological University Clinic. In addition, he held leading functions in clinics in Gießen and Dresden and is now active at the University Clinic Cambridge as Senior Honorary Research Fellow. There he led the muscle outpatient clinic and is still scientifically active. By 2020 he was chairman of the intensive medication committee of the European Academy of Neurology.

The role of medical care centers

The opening of Maxwell Damian's new practice fits into the trend of the medical care centers (MVZ), which offer patient -oriented care from a single source. MVZ can be founded by resident doctors, approved hospitals and various other organizations to strengthen medical care in the region. According to the AOK, MVZ are attractive employers for many doctors because they offer more flexible working hours and employees.

In 2023, a total of 30,112 doctors and psychotherapists worked in MVZ in Germany. The largest specialist groups that are represented there include general practitioners, surgery, orthopedics and specialist internal medicine. Maxwell Damian's practice will thus help increase the number of specialists in the region and to improve health care.

This innovation will not only enrich the medical landscape in Pirmasens, but could also represent a model for similar facilities in other regions that face similar challenges in the healthcare system.
