Bomb alarm in Dresden again: Care bridge closed and evacuated!

Bomb alarm in Dresden again: Care bridge closed and evacuated!

A suspicious object was discovered today during demolition work on the Dresden Carolabrücke. As a result, police officers blocked the immediate area. The ordnance disposal service was immediately alerted to examine the site. In the meantime, the route of a funeral march to commemorate the killed police officer Maximilian Stoppa was changed at short notice due to the find.

The dangerous find is particularly explosive, since a flying bomb from World War II was only recovered in the Elbe on Monday. Fortunately, this bomb, a 250 kg of American design, was without detonator and therefore harmless. However, this situation reminds that even 80 years after the end of the Second World War, unexploded goers are still discovered in Dresden. The city had been repeatedly bombed during the war, especially between February 13 and 14, 1945, which led to massive destruction and demanded numerous civilian victims.

evacuation measures and traffic disruptions

Already around 7:50 a.m. the evacuation of the corresponding blocking circuit began. In the course of the morning, several hundred people, including many seniors, were waiting for the result of the defusing in emergency accommodation. The fire brigade was ready to offer the people concerned during the inconvenience. The population was called to bypass the city center extensively because there were significant traffic disruptions.

  • 12:54 p.m.: The bomb was successfully defused, this was confirmed by the MDR Saxony.
  • 12:36 p.m.: The evacuation was completed in good time and the defusing could begin.
  • 12:26 p.m.: operations management confirmed the start of defusing in a few minutes.
  • 11:10 a.m.: helicopter flirted with the area for safety search.

The defused bomb is to be mechanically divided after the removal in Zeithain near Riesa, whereby the explosive is burned and the steel is recycled. Fire brigade spokesman Michael Klahre expressed overall relief and gratitude about the rapid handling of the situation.

further precautions and support for those affected

The city administration had taken quick measures to protect the population as best as possible. Emergency shelters were ready for the people who had to leave their apartments at short notice. However, the city came under pressure due to the unexpected situation, as many residents had difficulty clearing the barrier. The city's information website for evacuation was temporarily unavailable at the time of the measures, which led to additional confusion.

Dresden also remains in the present a city that is confronted with the heirlooms of their warlike past. The impending security and defusing measures are not only a technical challenge, but also part of the constant effort to ensure the security of the citizens in the often affected region. Again and again it becomes clear that the traces of war, whether visible or invisible, still shape the history of the city today.
