in 2025 it is time to remember the outstanding theologian and resistance fighter Dietrich Bonhoeffer, whose 80th anniversary on April 9th is committed. Bonhoeffer, born on February 4, 1906, was a brave fighter against the National Socialist regime, which executed him shortly before the end of the war. His voice, which arose for the rights of the oppressed Jews, and his unshakable search for peace not only have a significant scope in his time, but to this day.
The influence of Bonhoeffer on today's society is particularly evident in his statement: "Only those who scream for the Jews can sing Gregorian." This sentence will be the central focus of a study day, which is organized by the Evangelical Academy of Saxony on April 5, 2025 in the Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Haus in Leipzig. This afternoon, all interested parties are invited to deal in detail with Bonhoeffer's views of anti -Semitism and his tireless struggle for peace and justice.
An important part of the study day will be the examination of Bonhoeffer's theological texts, which deal with the question of peace and security in the face of impending conflicts. The director of the academy, Pastor Stephan Bickhardt, emphasizes that Bonhofofer was convinced that an effective certificate of peace of the church could only be conveyed globally and ecumenically.
The event is made by Prof. Dr. Peter Zimmerling, a recognized expert for Bonhoeffer. Zimmerling will not only speak about the theoretical aspects of Bonhoeffer's thoughts, but will also explain their relevance for our life today. The special thing about it is that the participants get the opportunity to deal more intensively with the ethical and theological questions that are still urgent today.
In addition, on April 6, 2025 at 11:00 a.m., a university service will take place in the St. Pauli University Church in Leipzig, which is intended for Bonhoffer. Under the topic "Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945). Martyr for Germany's future", the legacy of the theologian and resistance fighter is focused on.
In a time when global challenges such as war, flight and intolerance shape our everyday life, it is more important than ever to understand and discuss the teachings and messages of Bonhoeffer. He encourages us to raise our voice against injustice and actively stand up for peace.
The event promises to become a valuable opportunity to reflect on the role of theologians in society and their ability to promote constructive dialogue about peace and justice.
Detailed information about this event offer can be found on the website of the Evangelical Academy of Saxony. Registrations are possible on the homepage or by email.
