Podcast charts in Germany: How are they determined?
How can podcast numbers be reliably measured? While magazines and newspapers, radio and television rely on uniform standards, there is currently no such standard for podcasts in Germany. The diagrams used in this article are based on the rankings of Apple and Spotify, currently the largest platforms for podcasts. However, they use their own criteria when creating the diagram.
The USA is already one step further in this regard and use the so-called IAB standard for the uniform measurement of podcast downloads. This standard, introduced by Interactive Advertising Bureau, serves, among other things, to offer podcasters and advertisers better comparability of the range on the market. The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) is an international trade association for the online advertising industry that represents the interests of the digital advertising and media industry and feels committed to standardization.
players like Audible, Libsyn, Midoll Media, Podtrac and Nielsen took part in the standard. Platforms like Spotify also use the guide in the USA to measure the performance of a podcast.
How do the iTunes charts arise?
Since iTunes is currently the most frequently used platform for podcasts, it is usually the first point of contact for the latest podcast charts that Apple publishes several times a day and provides all users. In fact, however, nobody knows exactly how the iTunes charts really work. Because after the downloads have been carried out in descending order, the ranking does not seem to form. So the podcaster Daniel Friesenecker succeeded with only three downloads to land in first place on the Austrian iTunes charts.
How exactly the diagrams are created can only be guessed-a mixture of different factors such as subscribers, views, reviews, downloads and other user interactions is conceivable. In addition, the iTunes podcast diagrams are updated several times a day, so that there can be several most popular podcasts per day.
