The Geopark Porphyrland opened a spectacular permanent exhibition entitled "Supervolcania in Saxony" in September 2024. This exhibition will not only be an important educational resource for tourists, but also for local residents, which promotes understanding of the geological past of the region and raises awareness of the importance of geological natural monuments.
The exhibition, which was officially handed over on August 15, 2024, takes visitors to the Perm erd age on a journey through time ago. At that time, today's area of the geopark was near the equator, where huge volcanic activities took place. Two large super volcano events that took place over a period of around ten million years shaped the landscape with countless lava flows and explosive outbreaks. These special geological conditions left a mighty layer of porphyry rock that still characterizes the region today.
The importance of this exhibition lies not only in geological training, but also in its potential to mobilize the community. Education is a key to understanding natural processes and its effects on the environment. In addition, the exhibition is supplemented by interactive elements that enable visitors to feel the forces behind the super eruptions themselves. This promotes awareness of natural phenomena and its far -reaching consequences in flora and fauna.
The presentation is supplemented by modern technologies, such as 3D visualizations and interactive stations. Visitors can immerse themselves in the mechanisms of platter tectonics and the dramatic changes that super volcanoes bring with them. By exploring the rock formations, the participants learn how volcanic eruptions influenced life in the Perm and what traces they left.
With this new attraction,The Geopark Porphyrland not only created a place of learning, but also upgraded the landscape around the Geoportal Röcknitz. This historic building, formerly a racing horse stable, is now becoming a cultural center, which not only does the exhibition, but also offers event rooms and co-working places.
As part of this project, the municipality of Thallwitz and two companies are committed, which, through their collaboration, create an impressive combination of education and experience design. The Geomontan Society for Applied Geology MBH and Kocmoc Exhibitions GmbH have worked together on the conceptual and visual implementation.
With an admission price of 3 euros for adults and reduced prices for children as well as barrier -free access, the goal is to address a general public and to give all age groups access to geology and the history of the region.
The interior design of the exhibition follows the approach of addressing visitors emotionally and informatively. By telling the story of Pangea and the associated natural phenomena, it offers an exciting opportunity not only to understand the past, but also to think about today's changes.
The Geoportal Röcknitz is the ideal starting point for exploring the geopark and its diverse treasures and is increasingly becoming an important attraction for tourism in the region. The proximity to other sights, such as the Hohburg Museum, makes this place a valuable goal for education and relaxation.
