Felix Magath calls for the abolition of the Var in its current form: What kind of nonsense is that?
The 67-year-old, who is currently Global Sports Director of Flyeralar and is responsible for the relegation candidate of the second league, Würzburger Kickers, was once a great supporter of video evidence and often demanded the introduction of the system in Germany. "I was always for the video evidence, but I never thought that the referee would be demonstrated," says Magath. "I thought someone was sitting in front of a screen as a helper in the stadium and only giving the referee an impulse if he made a clearly wrong decision. And then he has to decide."
But that is not the case at the moment, believes the former master coach of FC Bayern and VfL Wolfsburg. "When it comes to handball, the intention must of course be crucial - and whether this prevents a goal," said Magath. "But how can I whistle for punishments when the defender, who is eight inches in the penalty area, gets the ball shortly before the goal line on a flank? What is that nonsense?" After all, the video referee should only be a "silent help".
On the part of the association, there was still praise for the referees. The VAR works well, said referee leader Lutz Michael Fröhlich recently at the DFB. "Here, too, we see an even stricter focus on the aspect 'clearly and obviously wrong'." On the subject of handball, the 63-year-old said that the referees are now punishing far fewer crimes. "Of course we will work with the referees to quickly achieve the same good demarcation as before the turn of the year." "Said Fröhlich.
