Lufthansa boss Spohr does not expect a quick recovery of air traffic

London / Frankfurt. Lufthansa boss Carsten Spohr still does not expect a rapid recovery of air traffic in the corona crisis. So far there has been no relaxation, instead there are additional travel restrictions, the manager said on Monday in an online conversation with the London School of Economics.

In the coming weeks there will therefore be very weak passenger numbers and from summer he only expects 40 to 60 percent of the pre-crisis level. This range alone is a great operational challenge for his company when it comes to planning employees and jets.

Request more coronates before departure

The airline boss again spoke out for the increased use of coronates before departure. While Lufthansa is preparing for the testing, however, official regulations are still missing. The view of the world is that passengers must either be vaccinated or tested.

According to the Spohr, the state-supported Lufthansa Group will use the crisis to position itself more sustainably and to assert their position in the top 5 airlines in the world. The fleet will shrink from around 800 to 650 aircraft.

In the developed markets such as Europe and the USA, it will probably take five years before the passenger level of the record year 2019 can be achieved with many more tourist customers. It is possible that business trips will never return to the old level and the business class is reduced.
