In a recently published study on media use, the Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk (MDR) continued to present impressive number of listeners. With 2.81 million people who regularly hear the programs of the MDR, there is a close connection between the listeners and the local radio stations in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. These numbers not only illustrate the popularity of the MDR radio offers, but also their role as an integral part of regional identity.

The state wave of MDR Thuringia is particularly noteworthy, which is now the 20th time in a row the most heard radio station in the Free State and reaches 474,000 people every day. These are 41,000 more than in the last analysis, which shows how important the medium of radio is for the everyday life of Thuringian people. Similar trends can also be found in the other two federal states, where MDR Saxony and MDR Saxony-Anhalt have a stable growth rate of listeners.

The feedback about the programs show that many people consider the formats of the MDR as part of their life. This reflects the commitment of the MDR not only to offer news and entertainment, but also to actively hear the concerns of the audience and to involve the program design. Ralf Ludwig, the MDR director, emphasized the meaning of this dialogue and thanked the listeners for their loyalty.

Another important trend is the rising figures for various specialized MDR radio offers. MDR Culture, MDR Sputnik, and MDR Classical all were able to win new listeners. This shows that the variety of programs appeals to people and that there is a growing interest in various music styles and cultural formats.

With the introduction of a joint evening program of all three state radio programs from the second quarter, the MDR intends to use economic synergies and to further improve the listening experience. This program, which is also adopted by other ARD radio waves, is an answer to the challenges of the modern media landscape and shows the endeavor to better use the regional audience.

The results of the MA 2025 Audio I, a comprehensive analysis of radion use in Germany, show that over 9,200 people were interviewed in Central Germany in order to obtain a detailed picture of media use. These numbers not only show the popularity of the MDR, but also the important role that local media play in the promotion of the sense of community and regional identity.

In summary, it can be said that the positive response to the MDR radio offers is not only a sign of the popularity of the transmitter, but also for social and cultural roots in Central Germany. The programs not only offer entertainment, but also strengthen cohesion in the community.
