Osnabrück (ots) - How can a sustainable future be designed that meets both the current needs and the requirements of future generations? This pressing question is at the center of the new funding initiative "Transformative Education for Sustainable Development" of the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU). With a total budget of 2.9 million euros, twelve innovative projects are launched that develop sustainable solutions in areas such as transport, water management, energy and urban development.

The DBU department head Dr. Cornelia Soetbeer emphasizes the urgency of a change in dealing with natural resources. "The consequences of climate change and loss of biodiversity are not only ecological, but also a social nature. Our initiatives aim to actively impart knowledge and to encourage people to participate in the transformation," explains SOetbeer. The relevance of these projects extends far beyond direct environmental education; They also promote democracy and social cohesion.

particularly exciting approaches follow the projects involved, which work together on a sustainable goal. In Cologne, for example, a turnover of traffic is examined that not only takes into account technical and economic aspects, but also integrates social and ecological factors into the decision -making process. Experts from various disciplines, so -called change agents, collaborate with urban planners in order to advance the feasibility and implementation in this country.

Another example from the rural -shaped Oldenburg region shows how local communities are included in the process of sustainable water supply. Pupils between the ages of 12 and 17 work actively with water supply companies and educational centers in order to develop promising solutions. Such an approach confirms that education and communication are crucial to promote sustainable practices.

Adjustments regarding the extreme weather events that are caused by climate change are also the focus. In Leipzig, 500 passengers have already been equipped with green roofs-a measure that not only serves to protect flood protection, but also acts as an air purifying element. Citizens are invited to participate in the evaluation and further development of this project, which strengthens the sense of responsibility and the ecological understanding of the community.

The DBU not only promotes these twelve projects, but also wants to inspire other organizations and cities to take similar initiatives. Of a total of 90 projects submitted, the best were selected and now begin to lay the foundations for an environmentally conscious society. The obvious question is how many people will be motivated by these initiatives to actively participate in a change and to make their own lifestyle sustainable.

In summary, it can be said that the DBU promotion initiative not only creates one-time projects, but also adds a movement that signal: education is the key to sustainable change. The 12 new projects offer an excellent opportunity to extend the principles of sustainability and to shape social change towards more environmentally friendly practices.
