Children's passport will be abolished from January 2024: New regulation for ID documents
Children's passport is no longer applicable from January 2024
From January 2024, it will no longer be possible in the citizens' offices to re -issue, extend or update children's passports. This new regulation goes back to the law to modernize the pass, ID and foreign law documents, which comes into force at the beginning of the year.
Two ID documents already replace the children's travel pass: When traveling within the EU, a ID card, including children. A passport is usually required for travel destinations outside the EU. The cost of an ID card for people under the age of 24 amounts to 22.80 euros, while the passport costs 37.50 euros. Both documents are valid for six years.
presence of the child when applying for
In order to apply for an identity card or a passport for children, the children must be present in the citizens' offices when applying for. The application can be made within the opening hours of the citizens' offices. To avoid waiting times, it is possible to make an appointment for the application online. After about three to five weeks the documents can be picked up.
Children's passports have a limited validity because they do not contain a chip and are therefore less protected against abuse. For this reason, they are no longer accepted as a valid ID document, some of them within the EU. In addition, the regular extension or application for new application is associated with a high effort for parents and administration. These difficulties are now eliminated with the nationwide new regulation.
