Zoo Leipzig: Tigerkater Tomak is dead

Again there is sad news from the Tiger Taiga in the Leipzig Zoo! Shortly after cat Bella died of cancer, the zoo now had to make another difficult decision. Tigerkater Tomak was put to sleep at the age of 19. The team at the Leipzig Zoo had no other choice.

"Together with the nurses, responsible zoologists and the zoo veterinarian, we decided today in the interest of the animal and redeemed Tomak from his suffering," said Zoo boss Jörg Junhold on Wednesday (August 2). "Another treatment was no longer justifiable. At the age of 19 he had achieved a proud and for this kind of old age."

For some time now Tomak had been struggling with his kidneys. They no longer worked properly, which was more and more noticeable in the hangover despite intensive treatment. It should also have noticed the visitors. He hasn't been running properly lately, and he had also broken down a lot of muscle mass. In the past few days it has been so strongly downhill that the decision to sleep was made on Wednesday morning.

Zoo Leipzig: Tiger lady Yushka now alone

Tomak is a real Leipziger. On May 24, 2004 he was born here in the zoo and provided young people together with cat Bella-most recently twins in 2017. Without him, it will be much quieter in the Tiger Taiga. Amurtiger Yushka lives alone for the time being.

"As we continue after this renewed loss, we first have to clarify with the responsible European conservation breeding program," said the zoo boss. But you have years of expertise in the attitude of tigers and would like to get back into breeding. So it remains to be seen whether Yushka will soon get company in her enclosure.
