Gaza: Start negotiations on ceasefire - hope for peace?

Gazastreifen, Palästina - The Middle East conflict, which has been raging between Israelis and Palestinians for decades, shapes the geopolitical landscape of the region and has caused immeasurable suffering. On February 27, 2025, several sources report on the course of continuing violence and the associated political negotiations. Since Hamas' violent seizure of power in the Gaza Strip in 2007, the region has been under immense pressure, whereby the humanitarian situation for the more than two million inhabitants of the Gaza Strip has adopted catastrophic dimensions. According to Remszeitung Second phase of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

The Hamas, which is classified as a terrorist organization by the EU, the USA and Israel, caused a dramatic change in conflict on October 7, 2023 with a serious attack on Israel. In this attack, around 1,200 people were killed and about 250 were dragged into the Gaza strip as hostages. These events, which was perceived as a pogrom by Israeli society, stir the collective trauma of persecution of Jews. The Israeli government was forced to intervene militarily, to weaken Hamas and to free the hostages, such as bpb

The consequences of the escalation

The military conflicts had devastating consequences: by May 2024, around 36,000 Palestinians died, many of them civilians. The humanitarian location in the Gaza Strip has deteriorated dramatically, and millions have become inland. The international community, including the United States and the EU, is committed to de -escalation, while violence in the West Bank has increased since October 7, 2023.

It is not only Hamas, but also other groups such as the Hisbollah and Islamic Jihad. The Hisbollah, an Islamist organization from Lebanon, regularly carries out attacks against Israel and is considered an important ally of Iran. This increase in troops and regional tensions lead to a changed security situation in the Middle East, which brings with it the risk of another regional war.

The role of the Palestinian organizations

Palestinian politics is characterized by a power vacuum and internal conflicts. The Fatah, a secular political party and the strongest faction within the Palestinian liberation organization (PLO) have lost influence since the election defeats in 2006. This division of power between Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Fatah in West Bank leads to a fragmentation of the Palestinian representations. The willingness to talk to continue to find diplomatic solutions seems to be very limited in the current climate of violence and distrust.

The roots of the conflict go back to the 19th century when political Zionism came up. The historical dimension and the deeply rooted demands on the same area make a peaceful solution one of the greatest challenges of international diplomacy. The failed Oslo process and the disused serious peace negotiations have been illustrating the complexity of this problem since 2014.

In the coming days, the international community will pay particular attention to the progress of the negotiations with regard to an ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Hope for improving the humanitarian situation and ultimately peace for the suffering population remains, even if the reality raises many hurdles. The conflict is still considered one of the most critical focal points of the global peace process, as well as SRF
