Universities demand diversity and respect in times of intolerance

universities and universities belonging to the IRO group stand for diversity, freedom of science and respect. On February 11, 2025, these institutional values were confirmed in a statement in which the conviction is represented that good science requires openness and intercultural exchange. The university group sees itself as a place of free thinking, discourse and diversity by wanting to create a social environment that is shaped by plurality and freedom of expression.

concern is expressed about current sociopolitical developments that could endanger these values. Attacks on diversity and tolerance are perceived as attacks on the basics of academic freedom. Therefore, the IRO group undertakes to act against exclusion, hatred and intolerance and encourages both employees and students to actively oppose forms of intolerance and to promote respectful discourse.

freedom of science in an international context

A central aspect of academic freedom is the definition provided by the German UNESCO commission. Freedom of science includes free choice of topics and organization in the acquisition of knowledge, the free exchange of people and ideas as well as the transparent publication of research results. These principles are fundamental to the independence of research and teaching what essential points are to ensure innovative strength and progress in science. In addition, public basic equipment in universities and research institutions is required, which excludes discrimination and economic prejudices, as described on the website of BNE UNESCO

The global decline in academic freedom is alarming. According to the Academic Freedom Index (AFI) 2023, over 50 percent of the world's population experience a restriction of their academic freedom. In the past ten years, 22 countries have significantly deteriorated in their academic freedom, while only in five countries has been established.

commitment to freedom and tolerance

The University Rectors' Conference (HRK) reacted in various ways to the situation of academic freedom. Particularly noteworthy are the dismay on state violence against students and scientists: inside in Iran, after the death of Mahsa Amini. The HRK has asked Iranian government to end violence and respect freedom of expression. This happened in the context of a broader discussion, which also deals with the role of universities in times of crisis. Universities are called up to stand up for cosmopolitanism and tolerance, especially with regard to the Ukraine War, as emphasized in a statement by the HRK, to which Hrk indicate.

In addition, initiatives such as the Philipp Schwartz initiative support scientists at risk: inside and promote their integration into safe universities. This makes it clear that the worldwide protection of freedom of science needs a coordinated and committed answer to meet the challenges of a changing society and geopolitical landscape.

The commitment to diversity, respect and freedom of science remains essential. Universities and universities have to stand up for the universal values, represent them and sensitize the next generations to shape a future based on the principles of tolerance and free exchange.
