Doetinchem, Niederlande - Today, on April 23, 2025, King Willem-Alexander announced that he will not take part in the funeral of Pope Francis. Instead, he will celebrate the King Day, one of the most important national holidays in the Netherlands, on April 26, 2025 in Doetinchem. Traditionally, heads of state take part in the burials of popes. However, it was not mentioned in the communication of the royal family whether Queen Máxima will take part in the funeral in Rome or stay in doetinchem.
The Dutch government will be represented in Rome by Prime Minister Schoof and Foreign Minister Veldkamp.
