Filmclub Ratzeburg: Nonconformist documentary about Dietrich Kuhlbrodt!

In Ratzeburg there will be a lot of excitement in the Burgtheater film club on Tuesday, June 17th! The documentary “Noncompliant” about the multi-faceted figure Dietrich Kuhlbrodt will be shown there. The screening begins at 6:30 p.m. and promises an exciting insight into the life of a man who, at first glance, does not tell a simple story. Because Kuhlbrodt was not only a perpetrator in the Third Reich, but also developed into a versatile actor and lawyer in post-war Germany.

Kuhlbrodt has had a life that is hard to beat in terms of drama. He attracted attention as a Prussian disciplinarian and later as a Hitler parodist. In the period after the Second World War, he worked as a public prosecutor for the prosecution of Nazi criminals and is not an unknown face in German cinema. In his documentary, director Arne Körner accompanies the audience through Germany's post-war history and tells of Kuhlbrodt's remarkable career. Both rare film clips and personal anecdotes are used.

Kuhlbrodt's eventful past

Dietrich Kuhlbrodt, who was born in 1932, vividly remembers the bombing of Hamburg in 1943. He holds a doctorate in law and worked as a public prosecutor, where he was actively involved in solving National Socialist crimes. Despite the adversities he encountered as a prosecutor, he never retreated from the public eye. He even appeared in an underground film as Joseph Goebbels and hid an African in his basement for a year who had to be saved from the threat of deportation. In 1975, he received the Collar Medal of the Allied Resistance Fighters in Europe for his courageous efforts.

The documentary “Noncompliant” not only shows Kuhlbrodt’s brilliant career in the German film industry as a screenwriter for Werner Schroeter and as an actor in works by R.W. Fassbinder and Michael Bryntrup, but also his critical engagement with history. Particularly noteworthy is the dramatic development of his artistic work and the link between his role in politics and his art.

A cinematic journey of discovery

“Noncompliant” has a running time of 117 minutes and will be shown in select cinemas from February 6, 2024, including special screenings in Hamburg, Hanover and Oldenburg. Music by Helge Schneider gives the film a special touch and underlines the emotional depth of Kuhlbrodt's stories. Next Tuesday in Ratzeburg, viewers will have the opportunity to experience the impressions directly and be inspired by Kuhlbrodt's moving liveliness.

The significance of this documentary lies not only in the exciting biography of a man who lived in turbulent times, but also in the reflection on how artists and lawyers alike helped shape the post-war period. Arne Körner's film invites you to look behind the scenes of a time in which each individual had to answer questions of morality and responsibility in their own way.
