Schleswig-Holstein Literature Summer: Scandinavian diversity celebrates its anniversary!

The literature review in Schleswig-Holstein will be particularly exciting this year, as it will take place from July 14th to August 15th Literature Summer Schleswig-Holstein 2025 instead of. This 30th edition of the popular festival puts the spotlight on the Swedish host country and promises over 30 events at 20 different locations between Flensburg and Mölln as well as Kiel and Meldorf. The event is organized by Caren Gäbel and Olaf Irlenkäuser, who are hoping for a record number of visitors.

As part of the festival, visitors can look forward to a colorful program that ranges from readings to musical performances. The renowned crime author Arne Dahl will present his new work, “Silent Scream”. This prominent reading will take place in Rendsburg on July 28th, in Neumünster on July 29th and in Klausdorf Schwentinental on July 30th. In addition, the Swedish-Sámi author Elin Anna Labba will read from her debut novel “The Echo of Summer” on the two evenings in Eckernförde and Kiel, which are also part of the program.

Cultural diversity and highlights

The festival offers a real fireworks display of cultural highlights. Among other things, Johanna Swanberg will read from her novel “Summer without a Plan”. To celebrate Pippi Longstocking's 80th birthday, the program also includes film presentations and an exhibition in the Literaturhaus. This special exhibition opens on July 11th at 5 p.m., accompanied by illustrator Katrin Engelking. Free entry makes the event even more attractive.

But that's not all! On August 14th, guests can expect a musical evening with a Bellmann evening, where Flavia and Rainer Panitz will demonstrate their talent. Jan Christophersen is another highlight of the summer of literature, as he will present “A History of Sweden” with live songs and take the audience on a musical journey through Swedish literature.

Events in detail

Particular attention is paid to the reading by Elin Anna Labba, which will take place on August 12th in the Eckernförde city library. This event begins at 6:30 p.m. and is part of the literary focus on Sami themes that Labba explores in her work. The story is set in the context of the forced resettlement of the Sámi and highlights the intergenerational effects of these experiences. The reading will be moderated by Cecilia Falkman and the German reading will be presented by Marie Jobst. Admission costs 8 euros and ticket reservations can be made through the city library.
