Shots during diplomatic visit: Enlightenment urgently demanded!

Washington, USA - On May 22, 2025, the situation in the Middle East has thrown itself back. The Israeli army has successfully intercepted a rocket fired from Yemen, which illustrates the ongoing tensions in the region. The conflict between Israel and the Gaza Strip, triggered by the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, not only brings military disputes with themselves, but also tragic developments in the field of humanity. In Washington, two employees of the Israeli embassy were killed in an anti-Semitic attack, which caused US President Donald Trump to express his condolences and decide to reject anti-Semitism. The two victims were a young couple who was shortly before the engagement. Trump emphasized that this incident must be regarded as a "unadorned act of cowardly, anti -Semitic violence".

The suspect of the attack called "Free, Free Palestine" when he was arrested, which further illuminates the complex mixture of the conflict. A short time earlier, Israeli soldiers reacted to shots during a diplomatic visit to the West Bank, which caused several countries such as Mexico and Canada to request comprehensive information. In this situation, the German Red Cross makes it clear that the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip remains catastrophic, especially with regard to the insufficient supply of food and medication.

Humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip

In the middle of all this violence, 100 trucks have reached the Gaza Strip with humanitarian aid goods. These transports included urgently needed goods such as flour, baby food and medical equipment. A private US Foundation, the Gaza Humanitrian Foundation (GHF), also plans to distribute relief supplies in the Gaza Strip in the near future. However, the preservation and distribution of help are affected by the intensifying military actions of Israel and the import stop for humanitarian goods.

The humanitarian situation worsened particularly after Israel has started attacks on the Gaza Strip since the beginning of March 2025. According to reports, 90 % of the population of Gaza are now displaced persons, which corresponds to around 1.9 million people. The basic supply has collapsed completely. In the meantime, the federal government has increased its help for the Palestinian areas to over 300 million euros since the beginning of the conflict on October 7, 2023. In this context, the special envoy for humanitarian aid, Deike Potzel, coordinated the German contribution to the region.

European reactions to the Gaza conflict

The reactions of European countries to the Gaza conflict vary greatly, often shaped by the historical relationship with Israel and the Palestinians. While the Czech Republic is on the side of Israel and voted against a UN SCHUMPENMENTION application for a humanitarian ceasefire, Ireland has pronounced official recognition for Palestine and criticizes Israeli military actions. Premier Simon Harris threatens to be questioned by trade agreements with Israel. Spain shows solidarity with the Palestinians and expresses doubts about compliance with humanitarian international law by Israel.

in Germany, Chancellor Olaf Scholz confirmed the support for Israel, at the same time he took the need to take into account the humanitarian conditions. Nevertheless, surveys show that 38 % of Germans do not trust the conflict of reporting on the conflict, which illustrates the challenges in public and media landscape. It remains to be seen how the fronts develop and what measures can take the international community to relieve the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and to promote peace in the region.
