Selenskyj warns of dangers while Russia's victory parade in Moscow
Charkiw, Ukraine - President Wolodymyr Selenskyj sharply criticized Russia's activities during the upcoming celebrations for the world War II. On the occasion of the military parade on May 9th in Moscow, Selenskyj warned that Ukraine could not guarantee the security of foreign dignitaries who want to travel to Russia. These statements are followed by worrying developments in Ukraine, where Russia again attacked Kharkiw with drones. At least 50 people were injured, including children, and numerous damage to residential buildings and infrastructure. This was reported by the local authorities in Kharkiw, the second largest city in Ukraine. Mayor Ihor Terechow reported twelve locations in the city that were hit by the drones.
Selenskyj expressed that it could not be ruled out that Russia could do attacks itself to accuse Ukraine. He emphasized these points in his warning, while he asked the international community to attentive developments carefully. The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also given the recommendation not to travel to Russia, as this is not advisable for security reasons. The president made it clear that every decision to travel to the Russian Federation was a personal one and the Ukraine could not take over any guarantees for the safety of travelers.
reactions from Moscow
The reactions from Moscow were not long in coming. Maria Sacharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, described Selenskyj's statements as the "classic threat of a terrorist". Dmitri Medvedev, the deputy chairman of the Russian security council, threatened Ukraine and exposed the possibility that no one could guarantee that May 10th would still take place in Kiev should act. Medvedev further described Selenskyj's words as "verbal provocation". In this context, Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin announced a three-day break from fire from May 8th to 10th on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany.
Ukraine, on the other hand, sees this announcement as a deception and in turn calls for a comprehensive 30-day break to end the conflict. Nevertheless, the Ukrainian government emphasizes that it behaves respectfully towards other countries, which is all the more important in view of the tense situation.
drone attacks on Ukraine
on the night of Selenskyj's warnings, Russia carried out a massive drone attack on Charkiw, with a total of 183 Russian drones used, 77 of which were intercepted. The mayor reported that the attacks were targeted by civil goals, which further tightened the situation in the region. In another attack, 14 people were also injured in Saporischeschja.
Selenskyj demanded increased support from its international allies for the attacks and again made it clear that Ukraine rely on the solidarity of the global community in this critical period. The Ukraine Air Force also reported that 73 drones were lost due to electronic disruptive maneuvers, while the Russian Ministry of Defense states that he had shot down a large number of Ukrainian drones and marching missiles.
These developments show that the situation in Ukraine is still tense. The Hamburg Arbeitsgemeinschaft War cause research documented a total of 28 armed conflicts worldwide for 2023, which underlines the dynamic development of the global conflict landscape. In particular, the focus is on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, while the tensions for the upcoming celebrations on May 9th.
In the given circumstances, global attention remains focused on these worrying developments in Ukraine, while at the same time the diplomatic relationships between the states concerned are put to the test.
