Saxony's microelectronics are booming: 24,200 new jobs until 2030!

Dresden, Deutschland - The economic situation in Saxony is currently presented with complex, since new developments bring about opportunities and challenges. In a current survey on location satisfaction in Central Germany, there was a significant decrease in the reviews, which fell from 2.7 to 2.9. This worrying development is primarily attributed to high energy prices, increasing bureaucracy and long approval procedures. Nevertheless, there is positive news from the microelectronic industry, which proves to be a stability factor.

On Tuesday, Friedrich Merz will be elected Chancellor in Berlin. New cabinet members are sworn in, while a new high-tech Fab of Jenoptik is opened in Dresden. After 2.5 years of construction time, an important step in the production of microoptics and sensors is taken for the semiconductor lithograph. Despite the celebrations, Saxony is also confronted with challenges this week, although Economics Minister Dirk Panter cannot take part in the opening because he meets with counterpart from other federal states in Berlin.

developments in microelectronics

The microelectronic industry in Saxony currently benefits from a strong increase in demand to microchips. Companies such as Economy in Saxony report on significant increases in sales. Jenoptik expects sales growth of up to 1,100 million euros and has an order stock of 734 million euros, which corresponds to an increase of 35 percent. The Jenoptik boss, Stefan Traeger, emphasizes the strong demand from the mechanical engineering industry and announces that the production at the new location in Dresden should start until 2025.

Infineon, another important player in the industry, is planning to build a new factory in Dresden, which is expected to cost 5 billion euros and will create 1,000 new jobs. According to the Infineon CEO Jochen Hanebeck, expectations for the new financial year have increased, with sales of more than 15.5 billion euros. These developments not only strengthen the Saxony location, but also contribute to the creation of around 24,200 new jobs by the end of 2030.

economic views and challenges

The positive momentum in microelectronics could lead to significant positive effects on the Saxon economy, according to a study by the Institute for Innovation and Technology, which was created on behalf of Wirtschaftsförderung Sachsen GmbH. It is expected to increase gross domestic product (GDP) and an increasing export quota, which could increase to 36 percent by 2035. These forecasts underline the relevance of the semiconductor industry, which is expected to make 7 percent of GDP Saxony.

The dark side of the current situation cannot be denied. The fruit growing area in East Germany has halved since the turning point, while increasing costs and competition could result in impending clearing. The high inflation rate of 2.4 percent and the unemployment rate of 6.9 percent remains a topic that requires a solution.

In the middle of these challenges, the “Open Court Day” day takes place in Saxony on Sunday, which aims to present farms and thus also raise awareness of the agricultural importance of the region. In summary, Saxony is in a phase of transformation, in which both new opportunities in high technology and old challenges exist in the traditional economy.
