Strong partnerships for Germany's raw material future: A look at Africa!

As part of a conference at the University of Zimbabwe, the Technical University of Bergakademie Freiberg (Tubaf) has significantly intensified their cooperation with African partners. On behalf of Rector Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht, Professor Carsten Drebenstedt signed a memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote cooperation in research and teaching. This five -year agreement includes the exchange of employees and students, the organization of conferences and lectures as well as joint publications. The cooperation is expanding the existing tubaf partnerships in the region, which already includes Mozambique, South Africa and Namibia. Tubaf reports .

The importance of such cooperation is emphasized by DREBENSTEDT, especially with regard to the securing of Germany's care with strategic raw materials. This is particularly relevant because geopolitical tensions focus on resilience and stability of strategic supply chains in the EU. A large part of the mineral raw materials that are necessary for industrial processes as well as the green and digital transformation comes from third countries, especially from China. The EU has therefore taken measures to reduce dependencies in these supply chains, whereby a strategic structure and expansion of cooperations with mineral-rich third countries are planned. new partnerships and programs

In the course of increased international cooperation, the University of Mining and Technology (UMAT) in Tarkwa, Ghana, was recorded as the 15th partner in the master program "Advanced Mineral Resource Development" (AMRD). Umat is the second African partner of the program that already maintains cooperation with the Taita Taveta University in Kenya. The AMRD program enables students to share students at Tubaf, the Montan University Leoben and another university in Europe, Asia or Africa, and leads to multiple degrees.

In addition to academic cooperation, Tubaf is also involved with a scholarship program with Mozambique. This program has existed for over ten years and supports up to ten prospective students per year who study in the Montan Science area and receive language courses. So far there have been no official collaborations with sambian universities, but since 1952 eleven Sambian students have studied at the Bergakademie Freiberg, including prominent personalities such as Veston Malango, the managing director of the Chamber of Mines of Namibia.

the social context

In parallel to these education initiatives, Fian Germany e.V. examines the social effects of German aluminum requirements, especially with regard to human rights violations and displacements in Guinea. This problem illustrates the challenges associated with unregulated supply chains and has led to educational measures that provide young people and young adults about the rights in raw material supplies. Through interactive methods such as role -playing games and scenarios, the focus is on the human rights debate and the responsibility of industry and politics addresses. Fian informed .

The connections that are closely linked by the Tubaf and their partners are therefore not only important for academic training, but also contribute to coping with global challenges by emphasizing the need for a responsible raw material policy.
