Hundreds of demand for the AfD to be prohibited from protest against JA Congress in Apolda!
In Apolda, hundreds of people protested on Saturday against the Federal Congress of the AfD youth organization Junge Alternative (yes). The police estimated the number of participants up to 1,500, while the network spoke colorful Weimarer Land of around 3,000 participants. Among the demonstrators were many who had traveled from surrounding cities like Jena. The Bundestag Vice President Katrin Göring-Eckardt (Greens) also took part in the demonstration, which was largely trouble-free. Only 18 administrative offenses and crimes, mainly violations of the Assembly Act as well as some insulting and property damage offenses, were registered.
The protest was organized by the Buntes Weimarer Land network, and among the participants there were representatives of unions, parties and the initiative "Grandma against Right". Among other things, a ban on posters was requested. The event was accompanied by a major contingent of the police that ensured that the town hall in which the congress took place was protected. Around 250 members of the yes took part in the congress, which ended around 1:40 p.m. and was accompanied by a family festival and musical appearances.
criticism of the city administration
The left-wing parliamentary member Katharina König-Preuss expressed sharp criticism of the city administration because of the rental of the municipal event center to the yes, which is observed by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution as right-wing extremist. König-Preuss announced that it would make a state parliament request because the decision to rent was made without the city council was appointed. A nationwide online petition directed against the rental collected over 94,000 signatures. This situation throws a light on the challenges with which democracy is confronted and is considered in the context of general freedom of assembly, which is considered an important element of democracy.
right to protest and democracy
The right to protest is a fundamental protest in Germany that has been fought for over generations. It is important to defend these freedoms, especially in the face of international trends that lead to restrictions on freedom of assembly in many countries. In the past, Amnesty International has pointed out that the protection of rights to freedom of expression and assembly is in danger, in particular in the face of repressive state reactions to democratic protests. In Germany, it is important that the police and authorities act differentiated and proportionately to ensure freedom of expression and assembly, also in the context of increased tensions about social and political issues.
The congress of the young alternative and the broad protest, on the other hand, are a clear sign that many citizens want to actively act against right -wing extremists. This can be seen not only in the high number of participants of the demonstration, but also in the broad support of various social groups on site.
The events in Apolda illustrate the need to be attentive and to stand up for the real values of democracy and human rights. The development in Apolda could be seen as part of a larger trend in which society becomes more and more aware of how important it is to stand up for its freedoms and rights.
