Fewer buses in Nuremberg: VAG tightened timetable from May 2025!

Nürnberg, Deutschland - From May 2025, the Nuremberg (VAG) transport company will reduce the range of buses in the city. This measure is part of a comprehensive savings strategy that was already decided by the city council in January. The decision concerns several bus lines that will rarely drive in the future, especially outside of rush hour.

The affected lines are as follows:

  • line 31 (Herrnhütte - Großgründlach): From May 5th, the line outside of rush hour will only run between Herrnhütte and Neuhof.
  • line 34 (Plärrer-Friedrich-Ebert-Platz): In the future, this line will also only be offered every 20 minutes, but outside the main traffic times.
  • line 57 (Langwasser Mitte - Fischbach Bahnhof): There will also be adjustments in time.
  • line 62 (Röthenbach-Kornburg): During the summer vacation, this line will only run in the main traffic times every 20 minutes between Röthenbach and Katzwang.

The VAG has already updated and provided the new timetables in the electronic timetable information. These changes are part of the efforts to save resources and to ensure efficient traffic management.

background to the importance of public transport

Public transport (public transport) plays a central role in general interest and is also a cornerstone for climate -friendly mobility. The Federal Government has set itself the goal of continuously expanding and modernizing public transport. Initiatives such as the nine euro ticket and the Germany ticket are the first steps in this direction. These measures are intended to increase the attractiveness of public transport and increase the number of passengers in order to promote the turnaround.

statistics show the important role of public transport in society: In 2020, an average of 20 million passengers used the offers of VDV companies every day, while public transport replaced around 14 million car trips a day. In addition, buses and trains save around 10 million tons of greenhouse gases every year. The shift in private transport to public transport not only improves the quality of life of the citizens, but also contributed to climate protection.

The public funding of public transport takes place both by public funds and from fare. Important financing instruments are the regionalization law and the municipal transport law. From 2025, the financing of the Germany ticket through the regionalization law will be supported with 1.5 billion euros annually. In addition, the federal government plans to promote investments to improve public transport with one billion euros from the GVFG federal program. This shows the endeavor to secure and expand the quality and accessibility of public transport in the long term.

The reduction of the bus offer in Nuremberg is therefore in the context of extensive efforts to cope with the challenges in public transport and at the same time to take into account the necessary austerity measures. In view of the upcoming changes, it will be interesting to observe how passenger numbers and the use of local public transport will develop in the coming months.
