Science as a motor for structural change in Lusatia!
Brandenburgische Technische Universität Cottbus-Senftenberg, IKMZ, Platz der Deutschen Einheit 2, 03044 Cottbus, Deutschland - On April 30, 2025, the fourth report on structural development in Lausitz was presented in Cottbus. In an event in which Minister Kathrin Schneider and the President of the Brandenburg Technical University (BTU), Prof. Gesine Grande, took part, the progress and challenges of structural change were discussed. Brandenburg focuses on promoting science and research to support the economic development of the region.
Minister Schneider emphasized the importance of science for economic progress. She emphasized that scientific excellence must be closely associated with practical use, especially in the context of ongoing investments in the region. Over ten billion euros flow into structural change, of which around six billion euros, i.e. more than half of the structural strengths, are invested in scientific institutions and research projects.
science as the motor of change
The Lausitz Science Park (LSP) is developed as a key component of the structural change. Among other things, a research factory for hybrid-electric systems and a center for technology transfer are planned here. In addition, the Medical University of Lausitz-Carl Thiem (MUL-CT) will begin training doctors in 2026/27. This digital leading hospital is intended to improve health care in rural areas and is a central part of the health strategy in Lausitz.
The fourth report on Lausitzer Structural Development deals with the role of science in regional change. Scientists, including Prof. Stefan Zundel from the BTU, are convinced that the investments act as a regional economic program and can significantly increase the economic opportunities. Initial recommendations for improving the chances of success include the optimization of the access of international students to the labor market and the necessary investments in social and structural infrastructure for moving specialists.
regular scientific support
Since the end of 2021, structural change in Lusatia has been scientifically accompanied by the Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the BTU. During the presentation of the report, several Policy letters were published that address important topics of structural change. Among other things, the fourth report addresses the economic perspectives of the region and illustrates the important role that science plays in this process.
In summary, it can be said that structural change in Lusatia not only requires investments, but also comprehensive scientific support. These measures are crucial to strengthen the region sustainably and to further improve the prospects of success.
