Second construction phase started at the University of Bielefeld - what now?
The construction and property company NRW (BLB) provides information about the current status of the renovation of the main building of the University of Bielefeld. After the successfully completed first construction phase on May 23, 2025, the next stage of the extensive renovation work begins. The parts of the building C, L and T were currently uncovered, which made an eight -month moving phase necessary. These parts are now the responsibility of the BLB NRW, which begins with the implementation of the measures.
In addition, the construction of a new parking garage on the university road continues. Further details on these projects are available in the reporting of the BLB. In connection with the renovation, the university informed about the official handover of the second construction phase to the BLB at the end of April and the associated effects on campus life have already been discussed.
modernization of the main university building
The focus is on the modernized university main building (UHG) as part of this renovation. The aim is to meet new demands on a modern university infrastructure. For the planners, this means to develop proven things and to make necessary additions, but not to pursue a new concept. The central tasks include the further development of the building structure, the redesign of the input situation and the construction of an expansion of the UHG, which will include an integrated service center.Another important aspect of this modernization is to preserve the central university hall as a communicative meeting point. As part of these measures, the BLB carries out a award procedure that aims to consider the holistic view of the architectural, functional and financial aspects.
new master planning for university construction
In the background of the measures, there is a new master planning for university construction, which was initiated by the Ministry of Culture and Science and the Ministry of Finance. This planning aims to make the construction of university buildings faster, cheaper and more binding. Sample projects include the University of Duisburg-Essen, the University of Paderborn and also the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences.
Minister of Science Ina Brandes underlines the need for an excellent infrastructure for teaching, especially since many university buildings from the 1960s and 1970s urgently need to be renovated. The previous planning approaches proved to be impractical, which is why the new strategy aims to link all steps from planning to construction more efficiently.
In future, universities should be able to concentrate on one to three short -term construction projects. The support from the BLB NRW ensures that the plans are solidly accompanied from the start. This also aims to make a simplified process design, which enables time savings for economy tests of up to twelve months.
This measures ultimately is intended to establish a binding budget upper limit, which offers planning security and avoids subsequent rescheduling. The three selected universities represent a diverse university landscape in North Rhine-Westphalia, with the intention of expanding the new planning to all universities in the country.
