Exercise in front of Büsum: Sea rescuers are preparing for an emergency!

Vor Büsum, Deutschland - On May 7, 2025, the sea rescuers of the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecker (DGZRS) started an extensive exercise off the coast of Büsum in the district of Dithmarschen. Eight ships from the DGZRS and the "Helgoland" work ship of the water protection police take part in the exercise that will last until Saturday. In addition, several ships are in use as an ancient actor, supported by three helicopters from the air.

The exercise begins with a theoretical phase in which important movements and skills on land and on the ship are conveyed on Thursday. The practical scenarios that simulate the reality of the sea rescue are only presented on Friday in order to create realistic conditions as possible. Interested citizens have the opportunity to watch the exercises in the Südhafen from Friday from Friday, such as "https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/schleswig-holstein/buesum-seenotreetter-notfall, Regionheidenews2970.html" target = "_ blank" rel = "noopener noreferrer"> ndr reported.

exercise and challenges

On the second day of the exercise, a cutter crew reported an emergency: a fishing cutter drove without driving towards the mussel benches. The voluntary sea rescue officer Sabrina Most and her colleague Jannick Budahn were on the ship Mervi. During the approach to the cutter, the sea rescuers heard screams and saw a woman who hectically waved. The woman was part of the ETG team (Emergency Training Group) from I.S.A.R. Germany, which acted as an injured actor.

The exercise presented the sea rescuers in front of a variety of challenges called "chaos phase". Sabrina Most and Dennis Angenendt first explored the situation on board the accident. Important questions that had to be clarified in this phase to cope with the situation included: Who is on board? Are there people who are missing? What is the condition of the ship and are there potential dangers? Possible medical emergencies included hypothermia, open fractures, traumatic brain trauma and respiratory arrest, such as Seenotretter reported.

The exercise not only illustrated the technical challenges such as water slump and drift into danger areas, but also included a psychosocial element, since the actors simulated fear, confusion and severe pain. These aspects are crucial for the preparation of the sea rescuers for real emergencies in the water.
