From the dance variety to the IT office: Cafè Prague and his golden era
The legendary Café Prague, once the last dance variety in Dresden and a meeting point for artists, celebrates its 67th birthday this year - but the glorious times are long gone! Founded on December 20, 1956, it quickly turned from a catering business with fashion shows to the popular Varietétheater, which delighted Dresden with new, rousing shows. During the GDR age it was the stage for countless talents, including well-known names such as Eberhard Cohrs and Susi Schuster.
After a 30-year success story, the café had to close for renovation work and has never opened again as a dance variety. The chairs on which the audience used to be sitting have now been replaced by offices of an IT company. Once a "miracle and jewelry" of the city, the Café Prague is only a shadow of itself today. The name that once so dazzling lives on in the memories of the older generation, while the new tenants repeatedly fail. The golden era of Café Prague is finally over, and the heritage of the cult site only remains alive in the swinging lettering on Seestrasse.
