VW Manufaktur in Dresden: Is the end of an innovation symbol?

Straßburger Platz, 01069 Dresden, Deutschland - The future of the glass VW manufactory in Dresden is on the brink! In the middle of the Volkswagen crisis, the production facility is traded as a possible closure candidate. Florian Berndt, chairman of the Dresden Left, warns that a closure would "leave a gaping wound in the heart of the city". He criticizes that Volkswagen wants to carry out their own problems on the back of the workers, while 4.5 billion euros were also distributed to shareholders.

The manufactory, which was originally launched as a prestige project, has been struggling with falling sales figures in recent years. After the production of the "Phaeton" in 2016 was discontinued, electric golf and the ID3 have been manufactured since 2021. The IG Metall and the works council of VW Saxony are pushing for further discussions with the company, since massive cuts and factory closures are threatened. "There is no reason to give all," emphasizes IG Metall district manager Dirk Schulze, while the uncertainty is growing on the future of jobs in the region.
